Hi I'm Manuel, I'm doing a PhD in Learning Analytics at TU Delft

I've always been fascinated by emerging technologies and their applications. As a PhD student at the Centre for Education and Learning (CEL), I explore how people learn and how data, analytics, and AI can support that process.

My current research focuses on using Learning Analytics to understand how students interact with Large Language Models (LLMs) for learning. By studying these interactions, we can design better tools and interfaces to support them. I’m building JELAI, a Jupyter Environment for Learning Analytics and AI, to help researchers and educators collect and analyze data from students' interactions with LLMs. With JELAI, we can examine not only what students ask but also what triggers them to seek help and how they react to the AI’s responses. Do they instantly copy-paste, or do they pause before typing their take on the answer? How do they refine their approach after receiving feedback?

JELAI embeds a chatbot within Jupyter, enabling the design and evaluation of pedagogical interventions through code and AI interactions. We can modify system prompts to guide students toward answers without directly providing solutions or integrate learning objectives into the LLM to contextualize students' questions. This allows us to study how these adjustments influence student outcomes and their overall learning experience.

Before starting my PhD, I worked as a Research Engineer at the Web Information Systems (WIS) group, where I discovered my interest in Learning Analytics. Before that, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Business Informatics in Mexico, which gave me a solid foundation in information systems and technology for organizations.

Outside of research, I enjoy music, traveling, cooking, cycling, and exploring good beer and mezcal—especially when shared. I’m always up for a challenge and love learning new things. Lately, that includes Generative AI, Cognitive Psychology, yoga, and making my own hot sauces.
